Current Projects

Malawi Research Database

Created and launched in 2008 in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, MaSoSHA facilitates free, publicly accessible research of HIV/AIDS in Malawi. Using MaSoSHA, researchers can locate articles, working papers, survey data, policy documents, and other useful products of social science and HIV/AIDS research conducted in Malawi. The data collected here represents researchers from around the globe and the collection is consistently expanding as new research is conducted.
  • GMK is currently working to expand the database to include research being conducted in Malawi in all subject areas
  • Redeveloping site to improve usability of database
  • Facilitating the development of international academic and research collaborations

Institutional Subscription to Up-To-Date

Produced by Wolters Kluwer Health, Up-to-Date is an electronic information resource commonly utilized by clinicians, medical students and patients worldwide. More than 4,000 medical experts serve as authors and editors, providing research-backed recommendations and answers to questions posed by users. "UpToDate covers more than 7,700 topics in 14 medical specialties and includes more than 80,000 pages of text, graphics, links to Medline abstracts, more than 260,000 references, and a drug database."
  • GMK is currently working towards providing Malawi COM with an institution subscription through the Global Health Delivery Project so that this resource may be accessed from any computer on campus.

Readiness/Needs Assessment

GMK is conducting in-depth and thorough surveys to best serve the Malawi College of Medicine and help connect its medical teaching faculty to teaching resources.
  • Determining current technological capabilities and limitations of Malawi COM
  • Determining e-learning resources currently available to Malawi COM, assessing needs and gathering information about preferences of students and faculty

Creation of Web Portal

Because Malawi's internet connection has such low bandwith, researchers, students, and professors at Malawi COM have a difficult time accessing medical information that requires clicking through several links. To address this, GMK is compiling a dynamic collection of factual, relevant, and accurate medical articles.
  • Increasing access to electronic learning resources
  • Providing access to up-to-date medical information
  • Improving quality of medical education
